The Details

The factory Subaru post-MAF hose on the 86/FRS and BRZ twins uses corrugated folds for flexibility, and Subaru tapped a sound generator tube into it to pipe engine noise into the cabin. That means you've got turbulence from the folds and a branch in the airflow path, all right after the MAF sensor where clean, laminar flow matters most.
